Khon Kaen city is the trade, administrative and educational hub of the Northeast of Thailand which is home to about a third of Thailand’s population. Both the region and the city itself have enjoyed rapid growth in recent years as investment has increased rapidly and transport links have improved. Khon Kaen’s central location in the Northeast has ensured that it is conveniently linked by modern highways with all the major cities of the Thailand as well as with major cities in other GMS countries, including Vientiane and Savannakhet in Laos, Kunming in China, Hue and Da Nang in Vietnam and Mawlamyine and Yangon in Myanmar.
Khon Kaen is situated at the mid-point of the GMS East- West Economic Corridor and is also on the major North-South highway system linking Kunming with Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Six flights a day currently connect Khon Kaen airport with the two airports in Bangkok.
The new high speed train route linking Kunming with ASEAN will pass through Khon Kaen.
